Do you ever miss the hiss of a modem handshake or the glow of a phosphor CRT? Check out #RetroComputing on the FlyingMonkey network, an Australian run IRC network and website, built from the ground up by its own. If you love the machines, protocols, and culture of computing's earlier decades, #RetroComputing is where that history is still very much alive.
If you love real-time chat about the hardware and software that built the modern computing world, #RetroComputing is one of the most dedicated hangouts on IRC for it. Whether you're reviving a dead 8-bit board, chasing down a BBS-era protocol quirk, or just want to swap stories about the machines you grew up on, this is where that conversation happens live. They are platform agnostic. Unlike the platform rivalries of the 1980’s, they don’t care what vintage or retro machine you're working with. From Acorn to Zenith, they will do what they can!
What is all of the fuss about?!
- Hands-On Help: Restoring an old machine or wrangling a period-correct OS install? Get advice from people who've actually done it.
- No Nostalgia-Bait, Just the Real Thing: The channel is about genuine retro hardware, software, and networking history, not just reposted memes about it.
- Runs on IRC: Keeping with the vintage computer theme, we’re running on a chat protocol that existed at the time many vintage computers were in active use.
- Supports old machines: Whether you’re running a modern machine and operating system, or have a retro computer that is capable of connecting to the Internet, we have a way for the machine to connect.
- Building communities around particular machines or operating systems: If there is the demand to build further communities around particular machines or operating systems, we encourage people to create their own channels to support these communities.
- Semi-regular IRC events: We plan to host regular in-channel events to try and build the community further.
While the IRC channel is the best spot for live discussion, it's backed by the wider FlyingMonkey network and directory.
- The FlyingMonkey Network: A self-managed IRC network and community hub, run independently rather than through a corporate host with some additional custom creature comforts.
- Supporting Website: A supporting website providing a number of additional facilities to help discover other IRC networks as well as make your experience more fun.
If you're looking for a solid IRC channel to add to your autojoin list, fire up your client, join #RetroComputing, and say hello!
